Your Air Conditioner needs regular attention so that it operates at its highest efficiency. It becomes important to maintain AC with time in order to save money and increase its lifespan. It collects dirt and dust particles during the winter season when it’s not in use. So, it is necessary to make our air conditioners ready for the summer season. Commercial air conditioning also uses a large number of AC units. Thus there arises a need for maintaining them in order to increase the lifespan of the system.
To clean the air conditioner, you must have an instruction manual that will give you the information about its different parts and filters. An air conditioner consists of two units namely, an outdoor unit and an indoor unit. An outdoor unit consists of a compressor and indoor unit (evaporator) which is located in a central duct near your furnace.
So here are some methods you can use to clean up your AC unit. But before starting any process make sure that your AC unit is turned off.
1. Clean and straighten the fins
There are two types of fins present: condenser fins and evaporator fins. Their function is to allow the air to flow smoothly in and out of the air conditioner.
Air flow can be increased by straightening the fins. Clean the fins of AC unit using a soft-bristle brush and straighten them using a knife. In many ACs, you have to remove the fan cage using a screwdriver or a wrench. Clean the fins gently because the pressure can damage the fins.
2. Unclog the condensate drain tube
When you see water dripping around the furnace of AC, it means that the condensate drain tube is clogged. Due to condensation, air conditioning coil builds bacteria which results in the formation of slime. So it becomes important to remove slime to unblock the drain tube.
Identify the access point in the drain. Pour distilled vinegar inside the pipe. Let the solution sit for 30 minutes. This process can be repeated every month.
3. Replace the filter
Because of continuous use of AC, the filter collects dust and dirt particles which lowers the performance. Turn off the power and then pull out the filter to check for the dirt build up. Change the filter if necessary. Cleaning the filter will improve air quality and efficiency.
You can wash filters in warm water using a detergent. The filters should be dry before putting them back into the unit.
4. Window seals for room air conditioners
At the start of winter season, insert a seal between the air conditioner and the window to make sure that it is in contact with the unit’s metal body. Moisture can damage seal due to which cool air can escape from your room.
These methods can also be used in the maintenance of commercial air conditioning. The performance and efficiency of air conditioners in offices, shops, cafes, etc. can be improved by these methods.
